“What About All the Good that Religion does?”

One defense of religion that I constantly hear is, “What about all the good that religion does?” or “Religion provides people with a source of comfort.” While that may be true to a certain degree, it also completely ignores a glaring fact: That no amount of good can negate all of the evil that religion did and continues to do.

Now some people may object to this statement, so allow me to explain it with a metaphor.

What would you say if there was a man who was a murderer, a rapist, a thief, a racist, a sexist, and a homophobe? You’d more than likely say he should be in jail for his crimes. But what if that same man also constantly donated to charities and volunteered at a local soup kitchen? Would their charity and good deeds erase all of the crimes they have committed? Would we give them a free pass? No. So the same standard should apply here.

The bottom line is religion does more harm than good, and no amount of good that it does should abrogate all of the blood that has been shed, all the atrocities that have been committed, and all of the violence and bigotry that is promoted not only by religion but contained within it’s “holy” texts.

Humanity will fare far better when religion ceases to exist, or at least becomes the vast minority in this world.

Conservative Cowards and the Guns They Hide Behind

guns

Yesterday I got into a debate with your typical Conservative Christian Teabagger militia member. The topic was on immigration. I proceeded to debunk all of his talking points and offer evidence to the contrary regarding everything he said. But I was also fair and not only gave him the opportunity but requested that he provide evidence to back up his claims; evidence which would refute everything that I said. I made it abundantly clear that I was willing to consider something that maybe he knew and I didn’t. Yeah. It never happened.

Instead he, at first, resorted to your typical responses of passive aggressive ad hominems and other logical fallacies. He went so far as to accuse me of being “indoctrinated” and “ignorant.” I was also told if I don’t like the laws in America then I should leave (Never heard that one before), even though I wasn’t the one complaining about any laws. It’s like he went to his “Conservative Talking Points Handbook” and opened to a random page and spouted whatever his finger landed on. He then, for some completely unknown reason, brought Anonymous-bashing into it and resorted to more name-calling like telling me I’m “brainwashed” and “in for a rude awakening.” He then informed me that we (meaning Liberals, Progressives, and Democrats) were not going to change America because, and I quote, “there [sic] are too many of us out there that will make sure of it.”

Sounds like a violent threat to me. Sounds like he’s saying that they will do what they can to stop us from voting even if it means using violence. At this juncture I politely pointed out to him that using violence as an intimidation tactic, especially when it comes to politics, is the exact definition of terrorism. He didn’t like that too much.

Well, apparently he couldn’t handle just one “Libtard,” and he ran to his brother, crying. His brother then came on there ranting in all caps, hiding behind a fake name, and telling me that I need to be “deported to a cesspool” and that I have “no idea about the real world.” He ended his very short paragraph by informing that I should “stand down” and that “You might want to find out who I am before you piss me the fuck off.”

More violent threats. So I did find out who he was. Wasn’t very hard really. Despite that he went by the name “CampDavid Ohio” (the name of a militia group) he actually lives in the Northern Panhandle of WV. It also came to my attention that he’s well over 300 lbs, all fat. And his brother, the one I originally got into an argument with, is around the same. Here’s a picture of the brother I originally got into it with:

He also has profile pictures that include a sniper rifle gun sight focused over Obama’s face, an upside American flag, a quote from Thomas Jefferson that says, “The Tree of Liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.”, a sniper rifle with the caption “Fighting terrorism, one liberal at a time,” and of course a picture of a White Jesus raising into the heavens.

It was then that I had a realization. These extremely violent Right-wing militia gun zealots are nothing but cowards with guns. Most of them couldn’t fight their way out of a wet paper bag with scissors in their hands. So they hide behind their guns. That’s why they are so paranoid that the government is gonna take their guns away. Because they know without them they’d actually have to engage in a fair fight with someone after they ran their mouth and would probably receive an ass whipping or two as a result.
